...and green

7 Small Shawls: T - 16 days and counting down.

Introducing the 5th shawl for the 7 Small Shawls ebook.
I do love green.
Particularly when it's dyed by Kristine. (Did you know the yarn I used - including the exact colors I used: The French Monk's Finest and Magic Bean - is on sale?)
I wish you could see these amazing colors in person!
I'm absolutely thrilled with the way it turned out. And I loved every minute of knitting it - very relaxing.
You know what this means, right?

It's time to divulge her name so we won't need to call her "Madame X!" Leave a comment with your guess - there are only three possible Pleiades sisters left (Alcyone, Taygete and Asterope) - by midnight PST, Friday December 17th and I will choose at random a winner for the lovely nickel swirl shawl pin (from my site) pictured below!
So...start commenting already! ;)

Taygete!
It seems doe-like in it's natural greens and...I don't know, vaguely forest-y?

Beautiful no matter what the name!

My guess is Taygete - the mountain nymph. Those gorgeous shades of green, and the leafy border, say spring to me...

Virgil, Georgics 4. 232 ff (trans. Fairclough) (Roman bucolic C1st B.C.) :
"So soon as Taygete the Pleiad has shown her comely face to the earth [i.e. in spring], and spurned with scornful foot the streams of Oceanus, and when that same star, fleeing before the sign of the water Fish, sinks sadly from heaven into the wintry waves [i.e. in late autumn]."

Ooo, ooo, me! me! I have both those colors in that yarn in my stash right now.

I guess Alcyone since she married Ceyx, son of Eosphorus, the Morning Star and they were very happy together, just like those two yarns (am I pushing it here? :-))

Taygete, the beautiful mountain nymph. The green tones remind me of ferns or moss in a mountain woods.

She is so pretty in all of her poses! Another winner Romi :-)

My initial thought for a name was Taygete, but then, I changed my mind because of the stripes and Alcyone and Ceyx were happy together, I now refer to her as Alcyone.

I think it will be Alcyone because of the other Alcyone in Greek mythology who threw herself into the sea at the news that her husband Ceyx drowned, and was transformed into a halcyon (kingfisher). These are kingfisher colors to me.

Ok, farfetched. I give up.

Blogger Unknown said...

My guess is Alcyone.
Alcyone threw herself into the sea to die after her beloved, Ceyx was lost at sea. In compassion, the gods turned them into halcyon birds. The term halcyon days refers to the 7 days encompassing the shortest day of the year which are the most tranquil and refers to the period when Alcyone, as a bird, came to nest and lay eggs. The tranquility of the shawl reflects beautifully those 7 tranquil days of nesting.
