...and the crowd ROARED

7 Small Shawls: T - 6 hours.

Or at least they said congratulations a little. :)

But I? I am feeling absolutely elated! Part of that may be due to the sugar and caffeine high, but really, I think it's just because I finished the 7th and last small shawl of my 7 Small Shawls eBook subscription, wove in the ends and blocked her!
Yes! Today! The day was not without its share of drama, but more about that later! I can hardly believe my odyssey has come to a fruitful and timely end. I am flying high right now!

Here she is, #7!
She is knit side to side.
The yarn I used, Bugga! in Adonis Butterfly, was dreamy!
I think this may be the one I will wear the most.
Funny, eh?

So I think it's time for you all to guess the names of the last two. Don't you? Just to remind you a little, here is #6 in all her red glory.
There are two Pleiades sisters left: Alcyone and Asterope. Which is which?

Here are their other lovely sisters! There's Merope.
Maia.
Celaeno.
Elektra.
And Taygete.
Leave a comment with your guess by midnight PST, Wednesday January 5 to be entered to win a lovely copper swirl shawl pin, as shown below.
This time, I will choose two winners randomly!

As of the moment, the eBook does not contain the last three shawls: Taygete, Alcyone, and Asterope. They need to be test knitted first but will make their debuts early in the coming year! Thank you everyone, for joining me in my quest!!! (ETA: the ebook contains 7 of the 12 shawls I ended up designing and knitting in 2010, but more on the others later!)

Happy New Year!

Hurray! Congrats!

No. 7 is definitely Alcyone with her connection to Halcyon days and the sea.

And No. 6 is perfect for Asterope, which is a butterfly in addition to being one of the Seven Sisters.

As always, Rosemary, your work is simply lovely. I wonder if undulating elelets in shawl #7 came from a stitch dictionary or did you dream them up? Beautiful either way.

Of course Alcyone is #7 and Acerope #6.

Asterope for the red one because she was loved by Ares and Alcyone for the aqua one becuase she caught Poseidon's eye. Red for war/courage, and aqua for the sea... I dunno...

Love them, Romi. Both of them. Probably the most of all!

I think Asterope is the blue one because it can also a butterfly genus and Alcyone, the brightest of the Pleides should be the red. They are all lovely.

Congrats!
#6 is Alcyone because it reminds me of birds' wings, #7 is definitely Asterope, because the zig-zaggy pattern around the border is reminiscent of lightning bolts. According to some sources I saw, Asterope can mean "lightning."

They are both gorgeous. I'm still working on Maia, so I have a long way to go!

Congratulations indeed! Not only did you make it, but you created 7 individual beauties (not several versions of one type of shawl). Very well done!
I would guess Asterope for the blue shawl; a double star and almost a double shawl the way it appears to grow out in two directions from the center back. Alcyone, being the brightest, could be a vibrant red.

I see streams of water in the blue shawl, so I would guess that it is Alcyone, daughter of Poseidon. The red shawl seems to have the mountains and valleys of the world, so I would guess it is Sterope, daughter of Atlas.

I'll go for Alcyone as the red one and Asterope as the blue; but whichever way you decide, they're both lovely. PLEASE tell me it didn't take more than one skein of Forbidden City for the red one - I'm lusting after it and would have to do some serious justifying to spend for 2 skeins ;-)

Just a wild guess, with no research (which goes against my librarian ways), but I'd say the blue-green one is Alcyone and the red one (which is, I think, my favorite of all) is Asterope. All seven are lovely!

Congratulations Romi - what a wonderful project... It was great to see how the sisters developed over the year...one more beautiful than the other. What will 2011 bring? My guess is that Asterope will be the red scarf (no 6) and Alcyone will be the Blue (no. 7).

It's been so amazing watching your design process come to life on your blog. Thank you for sharing with us!

So, I guess #7 as Alcyone because it looks like waves in the sea to me and Alcyone was thrown in the sea and #6 as Asterope because it looks like butterfly wings and Asterope is a kind of butterfly in addition to one of the sisters.

I say Alcyone for the teal, as the wife/consort of Posidon, and Asterope as the mother of Ares, being a rather red grecian god. Grats on finishing everything, and I can't wait to see the patterns. Especially for the red beauty!

Wow - how great to finish on New Year's Eve! They are lovely - a perfect completion of a wonderful set of shawls. I especially love the blue one, which I think is Asterope - I see the lightning in her. The red seems quite queenly to me.

I am still knitting on Celaeno, but I feel the call now for Asterope as well!

Yeah! You were done on your deadline! What a feeling of accomplishment and a great way to start the new year. I would say that #7 (blue) is Asterope because this sister is also called a butterfly, and #6 (red) is Alcyone as the shawl looks very birth feathery and this sister was turned into a bird. Happy and healthy new year!

The aqua shawl has to be called Alcyone. Alcyone threw herself into the sea after realizing the fate of her husband Ceyz. This shawl reminds me of the colour of the ocean.
That leaves Asterope for the red shawl. They are all so beautiful and I can`t wait to get started. Thanks for the inspiration.

They're all so lovely, just as the seven sisters would have been!!! I think that the red one #6 is Asterope, a twin star - like the soft lace ornaments are double, and the two halves are mirrored. So the blue one #7 is Alcyone, the "central" (as appears from Earth) and brightest star of the Pleiades ... a "blue giant" star!

Great job, Romi. You have spurred me on to knit ten lace projects for 2010, including many of yours.

It's a hard thing to be defined by your seducer, or perhaps your children by him, but my guess is that the lovely red shawl is Asterope, as she was seduced by Ares, the god of war, the red god. And similarly, the gorgeous aqua shawl would be for Alcyone, who was seduced by Poseidon: what more sea-like color? (It must feel amazing on.)

Wonderful wrap-up to a beautiful project!

Very beautiful, Romi! Congratulations on meeting your deadline. It was a down-to-the-wire, breakneck finish to 2010!

As to the names: Alcyone is a bird, and Asterope is starry faced - so, based on the shape, I would say the red one suits Alcyone best, leaving the green one as Asterope.

I think that Asterope looks so very wearable, with a wide range of wardrobe options. She's like a pashmina in versatility.

Congratulations again!

First off, congrats on completing your goal. All the shawls are lovely. I think the red one looks like it has a feather pattern so I'd say it is Alcyon (who apparently appeared as a kingfisher bird). That makes the blue-green one Asterope.

I think I will knit that red one next when the pattern comes out as I really love feathers.

10:54 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Well, my guess is Alcyone for number 7 and Asterope for number 6. Since 7 is a lovely blue color and Alcyone is sometimes a kingfisher. Asterope for the sixth because it is also a genus of butterflies.

Blogger flourgirl said...

I think number 7 -- the blue one is Alcyone -- it is the name of the Cousteau Society's research vessel and this shawl reminds me of the sea. Therefore, the other must be Asterope!

Ok... I think #6 the red should be Alcyone, and #7 should be Asterope.

They are both as beautiful as the rest of their sisters whatever you decide to name them.

I think Alcyone as the red #6, because she was turned into a bird and I see wings or bird motifs in the shawl. Though now that I read more, I think that Alcyone is a different one. But I'll stick to my guess.

They are all beautiful! I am so proud of you! You did a wonderful and impressive job with all the patterns!

My vote--#7=Alcyone and #6=Asterope

They just sound appropriate judging by their beauty. AND the copper pin is absolutely perfect for my red circular shawl tho it is still on the needles. ^_^

I'd say the green Alcyone, and the red, Asterope...just an intuitive idea - they both look yummy - happy new year!

Those are all gorgeous shawls. I was thinking of Turkish delights when looking at the red yummy shawl. But I would never manage to remember Asterope and Alcyone - simply just call it delight

I wish you a happy new year :)

Alcyone is obviously the lovely one in blue, and Asterope is a sweet butterfly in red.

Congratulations, Romi!

I vote for #7 (blue) as Alcyone, because one of the mythological Alcyones had an existence as a kingfisher, and the body of this shawl looks like feathers to me. That means #6 (red) is Asterope, and why not?

Alcyone for the blue, leaving Asterope - and I am definitely in (after a rather hectic period in my life) for test knitting #7 (at least) if I may.

My vote:

thanks so much for such a wonderful e-book.

Congratulations Romi! I never doubted your ability to reach your goal. The shawls are lovely! Here are my guesses for the naming of the shawls:
#6 (red) Asterope. I see flowers and flowers need butterflies.
#7 (blue-green) Alcyone. What a tragic story, but looks like water to me...or the peaceful time for laying eggs - bird wings.

I'm going to take a specific guess as to which shawl is which by stating that
Asterope is the red shawl as she is a type of nymph and married a desirable lover;
and Alcyone is the blue one as both her and her lover died at sea and were turned into halcyon birds so that they could stay together.

Love the teensy bit of mis-lead. But clearly #6 is Asterope. And #7 is Alcyone. I did not realize they were all completed; was doing a search for shawls that made me think "Water" when I gazed at them. Great design choice for the name. I have also queued it; just need to buy the book and check my stash. Lovely! All.

They are all lovely. Hard to tell which I will knit first.

I think the red beauty is Asterope, who is associated with Ares and the blue-green one is Alyecone (sp?) who is associated with Poseidon.

Thanks for sharing your creativity!

Hi Romi,
These are beautiful! I think the blue one # 7, is Alcyone. It reminds me of the 7 charmed (Halcyon) days at sea around the Winter Solstice when waves are calmed.
The red one # 6, Reminds me of Asterope. It looks as though it could transform the wearer into a butterfly!

Yes, the crowd DID roar and IS STILL roaring!!! The whole "constellation" of shawls is just beautiful. You should be so proud of your achievement. I am thrilled to be a part of it and I can't wait to make them all!

#6 - Asterope "Another name for Hesperia, the wife or desired lover of Aesacus. And, it is a butterfly genus"

#7 - Alcyone "Alcyone threw herself into the sea at the news [of her husband's drowning at sea], and was transformed into a halcyon (kingfisher)."
