Back where I started

7 Small Shawls: T - 83 days and counting down.

Today, for absolutely no reason, mind you, except for blind optimism and determination, I am feeling great about my ability to get all of my work finished when it needs to be done. Nothing changed between my hyperventilation episode of last night and this moment, but there you go. I think this is the same reason I have two kids instead of one. ;)

So today I am back up to, and beyond, the point at which I ripped so much back. It's so nice to be pulling yarn from the center of the ball again! Here it is, and it looks very similar.
I loved the overall idea, but thought the diamonds between spines were just too much. As you can (probably) see, the spines grow into diamonds, but in between is an uninterrupted field of garter stitch.
Also, I don't have yarnovers along the outside of the diamonds.
Much better. More elegant and simple. Yes. I like it! :)

And I think it's about time this shawl had a name, don't you? I admit to having had a name in mind all along for this one. Can you guess it? Leave your guess in a comment by Tuesday, October 12 - 12 midnight PST, and I'll randomly pick one of you to receive a shawl pin from Designs by Romi! How does this one look?
Go! Comment! :) And have a great weekend!

I'm going to say Electra, because her name means amber, similar to the beads and the yarn! =) Although, she is the "lost" sister, so I don't know if that bodes well for the shawl! =D

I'm liking Isosceles for the name... very geometrical. It's looking really good!

I'll go with Alcyone. Pretty!

Electra! This shawl meets the wikipedia description of that sister. I love it!

Sterope or Asterope would suit this one well!! It means "sun-face" (yellow yarn), "twinkling" (beads), and "stubborn" (your optimism about the pattern - and how quickly you bounced back after having ripped out so much work!).

Looks gorgeous so far - looking forward to seeing the finished product!

I'm going with Electra.

Its a gorgeous design - can't wait to see more of it.

Electra does seem like a likely candidate, but I'm going with Alcyone, the brightest in the group.

Well it has to be one of the Pleiades, so I'm going to go with Taygete.
She was also the Cyrenian Doe with the Golden Horns (which was one of my favourite of the Labours of Hercules in Agatha Christie's take on the tasks).
The glittering and twinkling that the branches of beads create make me think of that story.
Going to be lovely any which way!

I think that it will be called Alcyone : D

Just to be different - Taygeta, because the colors remind me of Tagetes, genus of the marigolds.

I like Electra too - she's beautiful!

Hmmm? I do not know the stories so well and all the names suggested seem so BLUE except this Taygeta... It is the only one that could be golden.

As it has to be one of the Pleiades, I'm going with Sterope as it fits it så well - both the lightning, twinkling, sunface, but also the stubborn-face. All the diamonds, the colour and all the ripping back....
Yes, Sterope (or Asterope) it shall be

Taygete - "the doe with the golden horns..." but only because I am still holding out to use Elektra for that stunning pink yarn!

Asterope or Sterope or Asterie-"of the starry sky" or "of the sun"

10:49 AM
Blogger Caroline said...

I think Alcyone should be the name. It is the brightest star in the Pleiades cluster. It's radius is 10 times that of our sun and has 2400 times the luminosity. All the gold yarn and amber beads - this shawl is pretty bright!

Blogger Sam said...

I'm guessing Electra as well. Looking fabulous as always!

Sometimes I really really really need to slow down and read before I comment...LOL! I thought you wanted a name for the shawl pin...*headdesk* so I'll re-enter and say "Taygete" as the shawl name. I promise to pay more attention Romi...LOL! :)

i am thinking Midas, but if you are sticking with the Pleiades, I like Taygete, who was turned into a doe, of which your color reminds me.

I gotta go with "Elektra". There is no other name that would symbolize the design and color you have chosen.

I like Taygete. Since she was the doe with the golden horns, the color and the diamonds seem to go with this to me. I've been following the shawls on Ravelry, but this is my first comment on your blog! I love the shawls.

I'm going to guess Taygete as well

I'm torn . . . either Taygete or Electra, but since Electra means "amber", that's my choice!

7:46 PM
Blogger Lisa said...

My guess is Asterope, because of the sunny, daisy-like colour Sorry for the frogging, but I really enjoyed learning the tip from the last post on ripping back with beads!

I also think that Electra would suit this shawl perfectly.

Well, after once again reviewing my mythology (a subject I just totally missed in school!!!) I will have to go with ELECTRA / ELECKRA with the "sunny, amber, and bight" qualities.

Thanks Romi. It is fun watching the shawl designs evolve!! Robin

Taygete -- for reasons already stated (golden horns, etc.), but also because of the connection with Artemis -- to me the diamonds resemble arrows, and the gold colorway is strong and fierce.

Alcyone, because it will bring sunshine during winter :) and peace at xmas time

Wiki - "Ovid and Hyginus both also make the metamorphosis the origin of the etymology for "halcyon days", the seven days in winter when storms never occur. They state that these were originally the seven days each year (either side of the shortest day of the year) during which Alcyone (as a kingfisher) laid her eggs and made her nest on the beach and during which her father Aeolus, god of the winds, restrained the winds and calmed the waves so she could do so in safety. The phrase has since become a term used to describe a peaceful time generally."

I choose Electra, the hottest burning star at approx 14,000 Kelvin and has a luminosity of 1225 Suns. Obviously, a bright and shiny beauty with sparkly beads is just the right thing to honor her.

Well I had to open another window to bone-up on my mythology! There were at least 3 that are listed at lost sisters, but I don't know how that has bearing on your lovely shawl patterns. I think others are right - she's going to become Electra.

I know I am late here... but I always thought this one would be Electra. It is simply electric how it shines... all golden. ^_^
