I have just started knitting this beautiful shawl but am stuck already with the chart. I've cast on 93 stitches but teh pattern repeat says 24 x 3 which is 72.... Help!
ReplyDeleteHi Ann C - I don't know how to contact you, so I will answer here. Yes, the pattern repeat is 72 stitches, but there are other stitches to either side of the repeat, and so all together, that adds up to the 93 stitches. HTH! And enjoy knitting it! :)
ReplyDeleteI successfully completed the beaded edging, but ran into problems with the first charted row. It doesn't say on the pattern, but I believe you start the chart at the bottom? I completed the first row with two stitches still on the left needle. I'm not sure what I did wrong. It is so hard to rip out mohair, I'm at a standstill, and the wedding is Sept. 6. HELP!! I couldn't get the suggested yarn in white, so I'm using the elann mohair-nylon blend.

ReplyDeleteYes, knitting charts start at the bottom and you read the right side rows right to left, and the wrong side rows left to right. I wish I could help further, but I really can't without seeing the knitting myself. Can you take it to a friend who knits?
Help for ripping mohair: you can freeze it first. That helps a bit. Keep returning it to the freezer to keep it cold. Also, don't rip side to side. Pull up on the stitch as you rip it. And go slowly.

I really love the shawl and do want to knit it, but every time I start, I get stuck on the first charted row. No matter how many times I count the stitches need for that row, I come up with 99, not 93. Last time, I got so frustrated that I just ended up using the yarn I had already purchased for another shawl... but I still want to do this one! Any thoughts?

Hi Ann E - I don't know how to contact you, so here's hoping you check back! The first charted row does, indeed, only use 93 sts. Perhaps you are counting the greyed out boxes as a stitch? Those are "no stitch." The lace pattern waves back and forth, and I wanted to show where sts fall with repect to each other, so the chart waves back and forth as well.
